What is a CLASH DADDY, you may ask? Well, my old buddy Oz (RIP) came up with it as the seed of an idea for a magazine or website or something or other (he was always full of crazy ideas) – it’s obvious, really. Dads/older folk/even Mums (is there a CLASH MUMMY out there?) who were growing up around about the time of The Clash, before or after – but let’s say generally on the wrong side of four zero, who might have children, but who are still growing up…
Why am I bothered? Well, I love music, in all it’s fertile variety – from the basic, unlearned indie stuff to the most polished muso creation, there is always something to prick the ears and feed the soul. I can’t tell you if that E is ‘flat’, or if the beat is ‘off’, but I can tell you that it’s great/poor/whatever. According to me….
So, what do I do?
I am programmer/booker at LATEST MUSIC BAR (EX-JOOGLEBERRY), a two floor venue in the heart of Brighton. As well some interesting, intriguing and often rather good local folk, acoustic, indie, ska, jazz, reggae, funk and dance we host established and up and coming acts from the UK and abroad. Plus we do comedy, theatre, spoken word, cabaret and anything else really! Get in touch with your ideas via: music@thelatest.co.uk
I also present IN BRIGHTON with JEFF HEMMINGS, Thurs, 5-6pm (live) and repeated 11pm-midnight every Thursday and 7-8am every Friday on RADIO REVERB (www.radioreverb.com), a 24/7 community radio station for Brighton and beyond. Just tune in to 97.2fm if in the area. I am also a Director of the station with particular responsibility for programming and marketing. It’s a labour of love, it really is…
I’ve promoted a few gigs over the years including the likes of Kate Rusby, Bert Jansch, Kathyrn Williams, Yousso n’Dour, Lee Hazlewood and The Levellers, and co-organised the CAROUSEL SONGWRITING FESTIVAL in 2006 with Chris Difford (Squeeze). Plus I manage or co-mang(l)e a couple of acts: LOS ALBERTOS (www.losalbertos.co.uk) and JO HARMAN (www.joharman.com). Both great in their own ways. Really, I mean it! They are just two clients currently under the wing of BiGiAM (www.bigiam.co.uk), a music promotions, consultancy and management company for which I am one of three associates.
Los Albertos – Sleep
I am also MUSIC EDITOR for LATEST 7 (www.latest7.co.uk), a weekly entertainment, arts and listings magazine based in Brighton. This means I get lots of blags, free product and get to talk artists. Occasionally I find then repeating themselves parrot fashion somewhere else. And I thought I was special…
I’m always on the look out for new music to review/talk/critique here and for the radio, magazine and venue – so get in contact via email: music@thelatest.co.uk
